New Homes in Pontypool

Live the life

Located in Monmouthshire just a short commute from Newport and Cardiff, Pontypool is a popular place for people who want to settle in a vibrant town within easy reach of nearby cities. Whether you’re taking a relaxing stroll through the park, browsing exhibits at local museums or enjoying a day of retail therapy, there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy close to your new home in Pontypool.

Things to see and do

One of the most popular attractions in the town is Pontypool Park, where you can wander through the Italian Gardens, explore Folly Tower or take the kids to the adventure playground. If you enjoy finding out more about local history, you can pay a visit to the Gorsedd Stone Circle, a traditional bardic ceremony site.

Other places of interest in the town include Pontypool Museum - home to 15,000 artefacts and an on-site tea room - and The Blaenafon Cheddar Company shop, which sells handmade produce.

If you have children, there are lots of attractions just a short drive from the town including Greenmeadow Community Farm in Cwmbran, Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway, Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit National Coal Mining Museum. Abergavenny is also nearby, where you can find Abergavenny Castle and Museum and the town’s regular market.

For a breath of fresh air, Cwmcarn Forest has lots of great off-road cycling tracks for mountain biking enthusiasts, while the Brecon Beacons National Park is also close by. The National Trust’s Tredegar House near Newport is a great place for a gentle Sunday afternoon walk with the family.

Education

If you’re moving to Pontypool with school-age children, here are a number of ‘good’ schools in the local area, as rated by Welsh education authority Estyn. These include Cwmffrwdoer Primary, George Street Primary School and Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw. If you have older children who want to study for a degree or diploma, Newport is home to the University of South Wales, the University of Wales and Coleg Gwent.

Getting to Pontypool

Pontypool has good transport links by road, and the local train station is on the Welsh Marches Line which goes to Newport and Abergavenny although services are infrequent.

The town is only a 20 minute drive away from Newport via the A4042, while the journey from Cwmbran takes just 15 minutes by car. Abergavenny is a 25 minute drive from Pontypool, while Cardiff can be reached in 35 minutes. If you’re travelling to London, the car journey takes two hours 40 minutes, while the train from Newport takes less than two hours to reach Paddington.

If you’re going on holiday or going overseas for business, both Bristol and Cardiff Airport are under an hour’s drive away from the town.
