Cleveland is surrounded by scenery, including cliffs and rolling hills, alongside historic towns such as Hartlepool, Stockton-On-Tees and Middlesbrough.

What is there to see and do in Cleveland?

Middlesbrough is the largest town in Cleveland, and is situated on the south bank of the River Tees. Here you can visit a variety of cultural landmarks, including Aklam Hall, a Grade I listed building from 1678, and one of the largest transporter bridges in the world, one of only two still in use in England. Middleborough Institute of Modern art opened in 2007, and displays pieces by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Henry Matisse.

The town of Hartlepool has a rich history. Once a medieval town, today you can still see Hartlepool Town Wall, which surrounded the town in the 14th century. It also offers an indoor shopping centre and a variety of restaurants and bars.

Stockton-On-Tees is a market town, through which the River Tees runs. Previously a major port in the area, it is home to the largest outdoor market in the North East of England, which began in the 1300s. Stockton-On-Tees also boasts a large sports complex, “Splash” which includes a wave pool, a spa pool and several flumes.

The River Tees has recently been converted into a white water course, offering rafting, power boating and surfing. Stockton also hosts a free annual outdoor festival, Stockton International Riverside Festival, which showcases comedy, music and dance attracting 250,000 visitors.

The nearest city is Newcastle, offering excellent shopping, nightlife and culture.

Nature lovers cannot fail to be impressed by Cleveland’s landmarks, perhaps the most famous of these is the historic Rosemary Topping. This hill is known because of its unique shape, caused by a mixture of geological fault and a mining collapse, which created a moderate slope on one side, and a jagged cliff edge on the other.

From the summit, you can admire the views of Cleveland and North Yorkshire. In this area you can also explore diverse habitats, with its woodlands and moorlands, and even an old abandoned quarry.

The coastline here not only provides picturesque views, but also a fun day out for all the family. Saltburn Beach offers sandy beaches, nearby shops and cafes, and a variety of water sports, including surfing, kayaking and jet skiing.

What are transport links like in Cleveland?

The nearest airport is Durham Tees Valley International Airport, and a little further away is Newcastle Airport.

Long distance trains from Middleborough, Hartlepool, and Stockton-On-Tees run to York and Newcastle, and other areas. Local trains and buses also run regularly in Cleveland.

The A2 runs to the North and South of Cleveland, and can be accessed via the A66.

The A66 runs west of Cleveland, and later joins the M6, leading to areas in the west of England.
