Forge Valley Woods
Sitting along the banks of the River Derwent, Forge Valley Woods is teeming with rare wildlife and flora. As the name suggests, there used to be a forge once. The woods were coppiced to provide charcoal to smelt the locally mined ironstone. Today, there is a geology trail that you can follow to discover the North York Moors from another perspective.Sutton Bank
This hill in the Hambleton District, in the North York Moors, offers stunning views of the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray. The trail takes five hours to complete and is suitable for everyone. And if you’d like some rest, you can stop in the village of Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe at the foot of the nature reserve.
Janet’s Foss Waterfall
This walking trail is simply magical, suitable for adults and children. It goes from the village of Malham to Janet’s Foss, following the beck along gravel through fields. It’s also a great place to take your dog for an evening stroll.
Roseberry Topping
Covered in banks of bluebells, sorrel and stitchwort, this beautiful hill in Cleveland is a spring masterpiece. Though short, the 8-mile circular walking trail is challenging due to its steep sections and uneven terrain. After reaching the summit, walk through Newton Wood for more spectacular views.
Robin Hood’s Bay
This 4-mile circular trail is right up there when it comes to the best walking trails in North Yorkshire. It starts from the charming fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay and stretches until the Scarborough-Whitby railway line. The path offers spectacular views of the local coastline and the North Sea and is a great rural getaway.
Kettlewell and Starbottom
Found in the heart of the North Yorkshire Dales, this 5-mile circular trail is one of the most popular among visitors and locals. Leave from the Kettlewell village and, after a few hills, enjoy a scenic walk by the River Wharfe. The second part of the trail is a little higher up, and you’ll get incredible views of drystone walls.
Ripley and Hampsthwaite
This picturesque walking trail is worth each of its nine miles. Packed with historical landmarks and wonderful stretches of open countryside, you’ll see the majestic Ripley Castle before reaching the River Nidd down in Hampsthwaite. From there, you’ll be walking along the river, exploring the leafy outskirts of Ripley.
Brimham Rocks and Pateley Bridge
This 8.4-mile walking trail will take you into Yorkshire’s stunning open countryside like you’ve never seen it. You’ll venture along paths scattered with charming cottages and green meadows. And if you want to rest your feet, the Crown pub serves delicious food and drinks.
