Outside space for you to enjoy
We know how important green, outside space is for you and your family, that’s why wherever possible our play areas and green spaces are safe, well-lit and overlooked by houses.
We're passionate about making our developments great places for wildlife to live too.
Creating great places for you and wildlife
We build our homes and communities in a way that takes into account the many plants, birds and other wildlife in the area.
It all starts with our ecologists. They do a thorough study of the area and find out which features they should keep to encourage the local wildlife, such as hedgerows, trees and shrubs.
Walking the dog or having a kickabout with the kids is all part of enjoying where you live, and having a healthy amount of green space is vital to bringing communities together, so we make sure that much of the land on our developments is developed into gardens and communal areas.
That's why we* added 372 hectares^ of green space in 2023 for our customers to enjoy (the equivalent of 532 football pitches).
The whole ambience and character of this estate is well thought out and landscaped, with lots of mature trees and central open spaces, making it a very pleasant and attractive place to live. Barratt Homeowner
Encourage greener living
As well as designing homes you’ll love, we want to make sure the open spaces we create are good for nature and for you.
We’ve installed over 6,500 hedgehog highways, so they can pass freely between gardens and we have created nearly 5,500 homes for swifts across our developments, using innovative swift bricks.
We also plant or retain more than 500,000 trees and shrubs each year, meaning there are even more habitats for wildlife.
And this isn’t just good for the environment; it is good for your wellbeing too. Psychology studies have shown that living in areas with surrounding green space helps reduce stress levels, and boost mental health in the long term. Meaning you and your family can lead healthier, happier lifestyles.
Giving nature a home
We've been working together with the RSPB, the UK's largest nature conservation charity, since 2014 to show how new homes and homeowners can help nature and support wildlife.
Together we plan open spaces and show home gardens in many of our new communities that will encourage nature to thrive and will hopefully inspire residents to care for the nature on their doorstep too.
